Why is your product so expensive?

We believe for every business the product cost should reflect the cost of production, which are higher for small farms like ours, without the scale of industrial farms. We have invested our labor, our money, our lives, and our hopes in our little Greenspring Farms in the San Francisco Bay Area because we want to spread the benefits fresh spirulina has brought into our own lives. Fortunately for all of us, as we ramp up production, our cost per item will come down and we really look forward to being able to bring the prices down as we expand. We hope you come along on this journey with us.

Why do you sell Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina online rather than in a grocery store?

We would love to be in every grocery store. However, we are a very small farm making a new food that no one has been able to buy fresh before. Getting the attention of grocery stores and distributors takes a lot of time an energy for a new producer like us. It also takes us further away from the people who matter most to us. You, our customer.

We want to concentrate on creating the best possible food that we can at the farm. The internet is an amazing way to connect with a large number of people using a very small team that we have. We can share our values directly with you and we hope to understand directly from you how we can support you with plant-based nutrition.

Will Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina be smelly?

No. Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina has essentially no or minimal aroma or flavor up through its Best By date.

Should I still eat my Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina if the package arrived warm?

No. We do not recommend eating any fresh spirulina if the cold chain has been broken. Refrigeration is essential to preserve the quality of the product.

What is the difference between powdered spirulina and Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina?

Like Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina, powdered spirulina is extremely nutrient-dense. However, Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina is live harvested and raw to protect its vitality. It also happens to be rich, creamy and mild and easy to incorporate into a healthy diet. Dried spirulina is likely to be far from its fresh harvest and often has an off-putting smell.

Why is it important that Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina is grown in protected pools? Doesn’t spirulina grow in nature on its own?

Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina is grown in covered pools because that ensures we have complete control over the farming environment. Our pools are truly protected from any environmental contaminants.

I have heard that blue-green algae is toxic. Isn't spirulina a blue-green algae?

As is the case with many plants, some species are edible and some are not. The same is true of blue-green algae. Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae, but Greenspring Farms Fresh Spirulina is grown in protected pools to ensure we’re producing edible, nutritious, spirulina.
